FAQs
What is the right age to start a mammogram and how often should I repeat it?
For women without aggravating factors, the first mammogram is recommended at the age of 35 and then every year after the age of 40.
How to perform a self-examination?
It only takes 10 minutes! Stand in front of a mirror and check for any differences in breast color or size. Repeat placing your hands on your hips, pressing shoulders and elbows to activate chest muscles. Then put your hands behind your head, raise your right hand up and with your left hand feel your chest and armpit. Gently squeeze the nipple area and check for any discharge. Repeat on the other breast.
Should I be worried if occasionally my breasts are swollen and sore?
Pain in the breasts, especially before menstruation, is “normal”, however if it lasts for more than a few days or if you notice something strange you should contact your doctor immediately.
If my screening tests were good, should I see a mastologist?
Α mastologist performs the physical exam, evaluates your history, and reviews the imaging findings. Therefore, after taking all of the above into account, he can assure you that everything is fine.
Could I avoid a mammogram in order to avoid radiation?
International radiation protection regulations certify that the radiation dose during a mammogram is very low and does not cause cancer. Magnetic resonance mammography is recommended in special cases and is always performed after consultation with the mastologist.
Can I have an ultrasound instead of a mammogram?
The ultrasound is a preventive examination and is performed in addition to the mammogram. Therefore, for women over 40 it is not enough.
There is a history of breast cancer in my family. Does this mean I'm in danger too?
Not necessarily, but in the case of a family history, you should visit a mastologist who will guide you. Breast cancer is something that scares all women, but screening and early diagnosis are the best “treatments”.
